Amanda Brugel is said to originate from the West Island, although this does not exist. Brugel grew in Courtice in the town of Oshawa. She aspired to be a professional dancer, but due to a rapid expansion, she outgrew every one of her dance colleagues. According to an article by Toronto Star, she revealed that in heels she was 6 foot 1 inch tall. As soon as I was able to outgrow male friends, I quit. Many former dancers turn to acting and in the case of Brugel it was a suggestion from an instructor in drama at high school who pushed her in the right direction. It was her teacher who advised her to audition as Anne for their school's annual production. Following a trial her options, she was eventually the leading lady for Anne of Green Gables. It was the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship led her to York University, where she was a theatre student and earned an Associate's Degree in Fine Arts in the year 2000. Since then, Brugel has been in 60+ productions both on large screens as well as smaller ones. She gained the most fame when she was offered the character of Rita in the award-winning TV show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel, the only Canadian of the season 1 actors of the series and was only seen on occasion, was the sole Canadian.
